I grew up in the district and have raised my children here too. After graduating from Wheelock College in Boston, I took a job with an educational software company where I worked as Market Research Coordinator. When my children were young, I ran a childcare business out of my home. After that, I obtained my license to teach middle school math through DESE and worked as a remedial math instructor in various towns while simultaneously running a private tutoring business. Now I work as Program Director for Hingham CARES, a federally-funded non-profit whose mission is to reduce substance use among youth in our community.
For almost ten years, I have been managing the affairs of an elderly widow as her personal representative. When I discovered that she had been defrauded by a financial advisor whom she had previously trusted, I actively pursued justice for her through FINRA. Over the years, I have supported many candidates for office in a number of different ways. It started in 2016 when I managed the campaign of a friend who ran for (and won) a seat on School Committee. I then ran for State Representative in the 3rd Plymouth District, which was a wonderful experience.
I was Vice Chair and Chair of the Hingham Republican Town Committee; I am a Board member of the Fiscal Alliance Foundation, a nonpartisan organization that seeks to inform the public about the benefits of openness, transparency and responsible spending in government; and this past year, I finished writing a book based on the true story of a remarkable woman I know. My proudest accomplishment, though, is being the mother of two incredible adult children.
A very long time ago, I volunteered as a candy striper at South Shore Hospital, where both of my children would eventually be born. Later, when I got a job at Friendly's in Hanover, I would occasionally waitress at the restaurant on route 18. More recently, I worked as a remedial math instructor at Chapman Middle School. The students I taught came from very diverse backgrounds, and it was a privilege to help them try to grasp challenging concepts. I particularly enjoyed teaching radius, diameter, circumference and area of a circle in the uniquely shaped cafeteria of the old building. I also volunteered as the drama leader for Vacation Bible School at a church in Weymouth and taught an after school piñata-making class there too.
My family and I have lived in Hingham for over 30 years. I was a PTO room mother, chaired Senior Night two years in a row, was a member of the Council on Aging and currently run a federally-funded non-profit. One of my earliest jobs was working in the kitchen at the Whiton House (now Scarlet Oak) as a "salad girl." My son followed in my footsteps and worked as a dishwasher there for several years. When my children were little, I volunteered as a Vacation Bible School leader at the church I was attending, and I wrote, produced and directed a Christmas musical that was performed by the children in the Sunday school program.
I grew up in Norwell, and my parents still live there, too. I am a proud graduate of Norwell High School. The Class of 1985 remains especially close. I manage our Facebook group, email account and Flower Fund (to send flowers to the services for classmates who pass away), and I plan our reunions every 5 years. It was fun to return to the Norwell Schools as a remedial math instructor in the middle school. It was, technically, my second job in Norwell. In high school and college, I waitressed at Strawberry Fair back in the days when we had to wear long prairie skirts and cotton caps. I love that the restaurant is still going strong. I also worked at my uncle's Christian bookstore, The Olive Branch, on Washington Street across from St. Helen's.
Several years ago, I was pleased to be able to assist the neighbors in the lower alphabet section get their beach and seawall cleaned up. A couple of years later, I had fun filming the pilot episode of a sitcom at a friend's house. For generations, my family has enjoyed recreational time in Hull, like walking Nantasket Beach, going on rides at Paragon Park, visiting the old aquarium and dining at the many wonderful restaurants in town.
When it was clear that a larger congregation would pose concerns for the woman I was caring for, she and I began attending Beechwood Community Church in Cohasset. I was so pleased to learn that the beautiful old building had found new life as a museum in town.
My very first job was at The Selective Eye in Scituate Harbor. I was young but was entrusted with opening and closing the store, selling products, balancing the register and even making custom leather belts. When I ran for office, I marched in the St. Patrick's Day parade and enjoyed engaging with the crowd that had come out on a beautiful but chilly day.
For several years, I volunteered as a reader with the Talking Information Center in Marshfield where I was able to record newspapers for the visually impaired and housebound. More recently I have participated as a voice actor in their radio plays.
In 2019, I participated as a judge in a speech and debate competition in Duxbury. It was amazing to hear from a remarkable group of talented young people. I have a wonderful extended family in Duxbury, too.
